This hospital was started in the year 1890 by the South Travancore Medical Mission. During that time, Kulasekharam village was surrounded by jungles and malaria was prevalent there. There were no proper roads, vehicles or means of communication. The late Dr.S.G. Manuel was the first Medical Evangelist to work in the hospital. He was called by the local people as 'Dresser' in Tamil 'Theressar'. He worked in the hospital for about 22 years. Then the hospital was closed for about 4 years. Again it was reopened in the year 1926, when the late Dr.A.T. Thomas, L.M.P. took charge and worked for three years. He was followed by Dr.V. Muthunayagam, L.C.P.S who worked for a year. He was followed by Dr.T .V. Kuruvilla, L.M.P. who worked for about 16 years. He was succeeded by Dr. Laban, Dr.G.M. Samuel and Dr.J.J. Sundaram who worked for a brief period. Again, the hospital was closed in the year 1950 for want of staff.
After the bifurcation of South Travancore Medical Mission, Kanyakumari Medical Mission restarted the work of this Hospital in June 1960 when Dr.J.R. Joel, L.C.P.S took charge. The hospital has shown tremendous improvement in the input of patients. The hospital buildings were renovated and a row of five kitchens, three paywards, a combined operation and delivery room were constructed. He worked for 15 years and retired from service. He is one of the few doctors who worked continuously in both South Travancore Medical Mission and Kanyakumari Medical Mission. He is one of the contemporaries of the great foreign medical missionaries. He was succeeded by Dr. Justin, M.B.B.S and later on by Dr. Enoch, Dr. Moses Singh, Dr. Lysander, Dr.(Mrs) Irene Lysander, Dr. Geoffrey R. Joel, Dr.(Mrs) Saleen Joel, Dr. Wilby Nathan and Dr. Queency Jacob who have worked in various periods.
E.Z.E. Germany under project No.88125 has helped the institution to construct the 'A' block (Bishop Christdhas Block) consisting of Outpatient and Administrative Block, and 'B' Block Ground Floor and First Floor (Dr.J.C. Vijayan Block) consisting of Laboratory X-Ray, General Ward and two well equipped Modern Air-Conditioned Theatre. 'A' Block was inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of Forest Mr. Lawrence, B.A.B.L and dedicated by the Most Rt.Rev.Dr.S. Jesudhasan in the year 1994 - 1995. This has boosted up the image of the Institution and also helped in the improvement of patient care. E.Z.E Germany has also helped to construct five peripheral health centers at Penial, Chemmanthurai, Kuraikudy, Thirparappu and Eanchacodu. The basic needs of community like immunization, Mother and Child Care, Water Sanitation and Faecal Disposal are met with and periodical educative meetings are arranged to educate the village rural people. People who need active treatment are brought to the base hospital at Kulasekharam. We are extremely thankful to E.Z.E.Germany for the timely help to a mission hospital.
